Details on Equipment to Contact ISS
I am new to ISS communications. I have lots of equipment but I would like to know in details the best antenna systems that folks have had great luck with and what rotor and software for the antennas. The goal here is to be able to have long QSOs more than 5 minutes with the ISS.
I will be hopefully putting together a Civil Air Patrol/Class Project to talk to the ISS crews during a school type setting. I need some experienced ham's who have made ISS contacts successfully to give me all their wonderful suggestions and tricks and tips to make this project a success.
Thanks a bunch
You may contact me directly if needed with photos detail drawings, or other information to give the kids a wonderful experience.

Guess I'm the BAD Guy!
I was connected (not trying) and leaving amateur messages on the BBS. I wouldn't call communicating pointless at all. I wouldn't call myself foolish or selfish, I do my best to be a good operator by promoting positive points in the hobby for all involved. The APRS packet comms were still being heard, both TX and RX, while I was active. Of course you would hear my packet TX on the frequency at the same time. This is radio, we all need to share and enjoy! I guess my parents were right when they said "some people will bring you down". And that is exactly what has happened. Thanks John-KB2HSH for telling the world that I'm the BAD guy here.
Great contact with ISS this AM.
Had a great chat with Mike this morn at 5:01 am to 5:03. Very strong and clear contact. Realy nice as always to make the NA1SS contact..

VOICE AT 1920Z/NOVEMBER 08
Was waiting to log some packet tonight as the ISS orbited just south on me
( Eaton/Western Australia ) just as I was wondering why there was nothing to be heard, I adjusted the squelch on my receiver and accidently moved the MANUAL button up one memory channel to the voice frequency ( 145.800 ) and there he was chatting away.

HERE WE BLOODY GO AGAIN!
Why is it that certain people INSIST on trying to hard connect to the ISS? Sure, I understand...it's almost MIDNIGHT, but the ISS APRS has been off more than it has been on this year. Yet, VE1WRG just HAD to clog both passes over FN02...simply to read pointless bulletin messages.
I just can't comprehend such foolishness and selfishness.
I guess my parents DID do something right after all.

Richard Garriot W5KWQ sent an email to AMRAD
AMRAD received today an email from Richard Garriot.
Is nice to see Richard interested with the QSO made aboard ISS after land.

"Hello,
This is Richard Garriott W5KWQ.
I spoke with some of you from the International Space Station on October 21st.
As I was logging all my QSL's I noticed the image of all your student activities on QRZ.com.
I would like to thank you for the contact, and will send a QSL card soon.
What was the names of the individuals whom were there during my contact?
Thanks,
Richard Garriott"

RS0ISS-4 vs. RS0ISS-11 and beacons
Noticed some comments from WB9IIV and VK6MJ in the status area. The forum is the best place to post questions so one can reply in a thread format.
RS0ISS-4 is the callsign for the digi (as is RS0ISS-3). The digi callsign changes depending on the mode the Kenwood D700 is configured for at the time. An alias of ARISS is available for use on both so ground users do not have to change their UNPROTO path when the mode changes. The PKT mode on the radio is -4. The APRS mode on the radio is -3. This is an ISS user interface variation and has little effect on the ground user.
RS0ISS-11 is the mailbox callsign. This is used in both modes and is for a direct connect to the mailbox in the Kenwood D700.
