STS-115 Launch postponed

Space Shuttle

The Space Shuttle Mission Management Team decided Saturday afternoon to postpone the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis for at least 24 hours to allow more time for teams to assess ground and flight systems following a strong lighting strike to the lighting protection system at the launch pad on Friday afternoon.

"We're going to let the teams go off and work the plans," said LeRoy Cain, launch integration manager and chairman of the management team. Cain said the Mission Management Team would review data and decide about Monday when they reconvene at 10 a.m. EDT on Sunday.

Anousheh Ansari is a "Go" as First Female Civilian Space Traveler

ISS News

It's official! Iranian-American businesswoman Anousheh Ansari, 39, will travel to the International Space Station next month as part of the Russian Soyuz TMA-9 "taxi mission," Space Adventures Ltd announced today. Ansari, an eleventh-hour stand-in for Daisuke "Dice-K" Enomoto as the fourth civilian to fly to the ISS, would be the first female civilian "spaceflight participant." Enomoto was removed from the Soyuz flight roster for medical reasons. Although Ansari has had at least some training in using the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) gear, it's not yet known whether she'll make ham radio contacts with Earth during her approximately 10-day stay in space.

Astronaut, Tasmanian Students Work Through ISS Ham Radio Contact Glitches

ARISS

Although apparent technical problems plagued an August 18 Amateur Radio on the International Amateur Station (ARISS) contact between NA1SS and students in Tasmania, US astronaut Jeff Williams, KD5TVQ, was able to hear and respond to a few questions. Then, after repeatedly experiencing difficulty copying questions posed by students gathered at Reece High School, in Devonport, Williams opened the NA1SS microphone and ad-libbed for a few minutes, running down what amounted to a short list of frequently asked questions he's heard during past ARISS school QSOs.

ARISS

Mission Specialist Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper, KD5TVR, and Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX, will be the only US Amateur Radio licensees aboard the shuttle Atlantis, scheduled to head for the International Space Station Sunday, August 27, at 2030 UTC. The only woman on Mission STS-115, Stefanyshyn-Piper will be making first trip into space since becoming an astronaut 10 years ago. Burbank previously flew on Mission STS-106. In addition to Stefanyshyn-Piper and Burbank, the STS-115 crew consists of Commander Brent Jett, Pilot Chris Ferguson and mission specialists Joe Tanner and Steve MacLean, who represents the Canadian Space Agency.

ISS Crew, ARISS Team Troubleshooting Slow-Scan TV System

ARISS

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) team is coordinating with Expedition 13 Commander Pavel Vinogradov, RV3BS, and ARISS-Russia's Sergei Samburov, RV3DR, to troubleshoot the slow-scan television (SSTV) system onboard the ISS. The SSTV system remains off the air for the time being.

"The ARISS team is coordinating with Sergei Samburov and Pavel Vinogradov to resolve some of the issues seen when the SSTV system was hooked up," ISS Ham Radio Project Engineer Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO, told ARRL. Photos of the current SSTV configuration that were downlinked to Earth showed "several unanticipated results" from the initial tests, Ransom said. "More extensive troubleshooting is being developed and could further delay permanent activation of the radio." He added that it could take a long time to work out the kinks because Vinogradov is only able to work on the system in his free time. Vinogradov will return to Earth in September.

ISS STATUS REPORT #06-38

ISS Status Report

Commander Pavel Vinogradov, Flight Engineer and NASA Science Officer Jeff Williams and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter of Germany prepared for Atlantis to deliver a new section of the station's girder-like truss. During Atlantis' mission, astronauts will attach the new P3/P4 truss, a segment that includes a huge new set of solar arrays and a giant rotary joint that allows the arrays to track the sun. The mission will mark the resumption of station assembly by delivering the first large new component to the station since late 2002.

Indiana, Australian Youngsters Step Up to the Microphone to Space

ARISS

Pupils at Robinson Elementary School in Anderson, Indiana, and at Teven-Tintenbar Public School in New South Wales, Australia, learned more about life in space when they spoke via ham radio earlier this month with ISS crew member Jeff Williams, KD5TVQ. The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program arranged both direct VHF contacts. During the August 2 QSO between W9VCF at Robinson Elementary and NA1SS in space, one youngster offered a new twist on the typical "food question." He wanted to know how the space station crew was able to eat without the meal floating away.
