How do I get started with Packet Radio, for ISS in particular?

I have never done Packet Radio and would like to use it to communicate with the ISS. What equipment and software do I need? I see TNC units on eBay, but unsure whether to buy. I have a Kenwood 2M transciever. Thanks,
Mike Glass

like you've never used packet radio is you need to train a lot on Earth.

between this page on the internet you will find a lot including a manual with all the commands to use the mode and manner APRS Packet.

for Packet WINPACK I use that works with another program called AGW. With AGW you need not spend money buying a TNC through it because you use the soundcard of your computer and TNC.

To connect your radio to the soundcard of your computer you need an interface. Here in Brazil we have various types of interface, but in your country you should look for what will be best for you.

For the way I use APRS UI-view which also belongs to the same producer WINPACK. Enjoy download both programs and sign up for both work well on the Internet.

Since you do not know how you have to ask Packet helps some Ham operator near you that shows you how to connect, disconnect and leave messages on a BBS.

It is very easy Packet Radio but you have to train hard in order not to disturb other land users who are also trying to connect to the ISS.

Once connected to ISS you can connect to another station using the packet and possibly astronauts are available to connect them to come and talk radio stations connected with the ISS.

I hope to have helped with this simple explanation
