Next Mission to ISS: Soyuz TMA-1 Taxi Mission
The Soyuz TMA-1 spacecraft became the next Soyuz (5th) to fly to the ISS. It was scheduled to replace the Soyuz TM-34, which arrived to the Station in April 2002.

It was scheduled to replace the Soyuz TM-34, which arrived to the Station in April 2002.
The onboard resources and properties of propellant loaded in the reentry capsule of the Soyuz limit safe operation of the craft in space by six months.Since at least one Soyuz has to be docked to the International Space Station constantly to provide emergency escape for the three-person resident crew, Russia committed to fly a fresh Soyuz to the ISS every six months to replace its predecessor. Missions to replace the Soyuz at the station became known as "Taxi" flights.
During 2001, European Space Agency, ESA, and Russian Aviation and Space Agency, Rosaviacosmos, signed an agreement on several commercial flights of European astronauts with the Taxi Crews to the ISS.
Under this agreement, after Claudie Haignere (Soyuz TM-33) and Roberto Vittori (Soyuz TM-34), ESA astronaut Frank De Winne, from Belgium, was assigned to the Soyuz TMA-1 taxi mission to the ISS scheduled for October-November 2002.
De Winne joined Russian commander Sergei Zalyotin in the Soyuz TMA-1 crew.
A passenger, Lance Bass, an American pop-star, started this year his training in Star City, but having yet to raise funds needed to finance his mission, this "point" made his flight in October 2002 unlikely.
Now we have received news about additional negotiations but it isn't official. Maybe Lance Bass will resume his training because a four-week training course would allow Bass receive a "Cosmonaut Certificate".
Mr. Bass haven't, in this moment, seat reserved on any Soyuz mission.
Probably the seat number 3 will be reserved to Yuri Lonchakov of the Russian Air Force.
Born on March 4, 1965, after graduation from the pilot school he served as a second crew commander, crew commander, squadron senior pilot, aviation brigade commander in the Navy. He flew Yak-52, L-39, Su-24, A-50, L-29, Tu-134 and Tu-16 aircraft.
Lonchakov has logged over 1400 hours of flight time. He is a Class 1 Air Force pilot. He is a paratroop training instructor and has made 526 jumps.
Lonchakov was selected as a test-cosmonaut candidate of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center Cosmonaut Office in December of 1997.
He will be making his second trip to the International Space Station on Oct. 28 and he previously flew to the Station during April 2001, when Shuttle Endeavour delivered the station's Canadian Robot Arm.
My info says that launch of Soyuz Taxi mission will occur on October 28, 2002.
As soon as I will have an official new about the scheduled Crew, I will update the Soyuz Taxi Crew page on ISS FanClub with images.
Stay tuned for further bulletins about this next mission to the Station.
