1. Upcoming School Contacts
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Liberty Middle School in Camas, Washington on Tuesday, September 15 at 20:25 UTC. Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium will facilitate the contact. For twenty years, Liberty's sixth grade students have actively participated as "astronauts in training" as they completed an eight week training course that culminated with a flight in the school's space station, Alpha-Z 2000. Computers, with software written by a local parent, linked the students to Mission Control with voice communication and security cameras allowed teachers to observe how the astronauts were progressing on their mission. One of the school's space station modules has been named in honor of Mike Barratt, who attended Camas Public Schools. The ARISS contact will be integrated into these activities.

Space Shuttle Discovery Returns to Earth After Successful Mission
EDWARDS, Calif. -- Space shuttle Discovery and its crew of seven astronauts ended a 14-day journey of more than 5.7 million miles with an 5:53 p.m. PDT landing Friday at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
The mission, designated STS-128, delivered two refrigerator-sized science racks to the International Space Station. One rack will be used to conduct experiments on materials such as metals, glasses and ceramics. The results from these experiments could lead to the development of better materials on Earth. The other rack will be used for fluid physics research. Understanding how fluids react in microgravity could lead to improved designs for fuel tanks, water systems and other fluid-based systems.
Kennedy Landings Waved off, Discovery to Land at Edwards
Fri, 11 Sep 2009 02:42:59 PM CDT
Mission Control has decided to target Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., for today's landing since the weather at Kennedy is unstable. The deorbit burn is timelined to begin at 7:47 p.m. EDT for an 8:53 p.m. landing at Edwards. The burn lasts three to four minutes, slowing Discovery enough to begin its descent

Upcoming ARISS contact with Tokyo Denki University High/Junior High School, Koganei, Tokyo, Japan
An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Tokyo Denki University High/Junior High School, Koganei, Tokyo, Japan on 12 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:25 UTC.
The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds.
The contact will be direct between NA1SS and JA1YQZ. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.
The Tokyo Dendai (Tokyo Electric University) junior hogh/high school was established in 1948. Our school has about 1200 students and we have a ham club (Callsign is JA1YQZ.), the club has grown to ten member now. This question member is a member of these ham clubs.
Discovery Ready for Landing
Wed, 09 Sep 2009 08:50:40 PM CDT
Space shuttle Discovery underwent the Flight Control System checkout and Reaction Control System hotfire using all the primary jets. A piece of debris jarred loose from the shuttle during the checkout, though it was determined not to be a piece of the thermal protection system. Late inspection results cleared Discovery's wing leading edge and nose cap and the shuttle is ready for landing.
Thursday's landing opportunities begin with a planned deorbit burn at 5:59 p.m. EDT and a daylight landing at 7:05 p.m. The next opportunity is one hour after sunset with the deorbit burn at 7:36 p.m. EDT and a landing at 8:42 p.m. EDT.
Crew Awaits Japanese Cargo Vehicle
The space station crew enjoyed a day off Wednesday resting up after the busy assembly mission. They also prepared for the arrival of the next cargo delivery vehicle, the Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle, scheduled for launch from Tanegashima, Japan, at 1:01 p.m. EDT Thursday.
The population aboard the International Space Station is back to six following the departure of space shuttle Discovery and its seven-member crew at 3:26 p.m. Tuesday.
The shuttle crew's newest member, Mission Specialist Tim Kopra, is returning to Earth after 44 days as a member of the station's Expedition 20 crew, while his replacement, Nicole Stott, begins a three-month stay in orbit.

Upcoming ARISS contact with UNICEF Belgium from Euro Space Center, Belgium
An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at UNICEF Belgium from Euro Space Center, Belgium, on 10 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:56 UTC.
The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU1CGB. The contact should be audible over portions of the South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in French and Dutch.
UNICEF Belgium will launch by the 25th of September its new educative campaign: WaSH. To promote this event the organization has organized a big drawing contest. It has been asked of the world classes willing to participate to imagine a WaSH logo and to include with it an important message about water and the needs to protect it. Three classes have been selected.
Upcoming ARISS contact with Atheneum Middenschool, Keerbergen, Belgium
An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Atheneum Middenschool Keerbergen, B-3140 Keerbergen, Belgium on 10 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:31 UTC.
The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English or Dutch.
Discovery Set to Depart Station
With over a week of docked operations behind them, the astronauts and cosmonauts said their goodbyes and closed the hatches between the International Space Station and space shuttle Discovery at 11:41 p.m. EDT Monday.
Discovery is scheduled to undock from the station at 3:26 p.m. Tuesday to begin the trip back to Earth.
The 13 crew members aboard space shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station completed final transfer work between the two spacecraft and returned the high-tech moving van "Leonardo" back to the orbiter's payload bay Monday.
Arriving aboard Discovery was the newest Expedition 20 crew member, Nicole Stott, who switched places with Mission Specialist Tim Kopra. Stott will handle flight engineer duties aboard the station until her return home aboard Atlantis following the STS-129 mission in November.
