ISS packet BBS needed?

Hi all,

Lots of stations this morning (1st June 2011) trying to digipeat through the ISS on 145.825 MHz. Afterwards when I checked the ISS packet messages log, to see who else had got up early, I noticed that one station had connected to the ISS packet BBS for most of the pass.

The BBS was in use in an attempt by that station to leave a message, that I understand the ISS crew do not read?

If that is the case, is there any purpose for having the BBS switched on? As effectively the pass is wasted to all other stations whilst one or more stations are connected to it?

Regards
