PCSAT2 Lives!

Space News

With those words, Bob Bruninga WB4APR informed the ham community that PCSAT2 had been activated at approximately 2040 UTC on Aug 3. Reports of contact including 9600 baud telemetry began pouring in to the AMSAT-BB mailing list. The PCSAT2 telemetry page began to display data as it was received through the APRS-IS network at http://www.pcsat2.info

In other news NASA informed the Discovery crew that they would not request a fourth EVA to repair a torn thermal blanket under the commanders front window. Mission control relayed the message from engineers that Discovery would be safe for re-entry.

SHUTTLE CLEARED FOR LANDING

Space Shuttle

Space Shuttle mission managers today completed their assessment of Discovery's fitness to handle the rigors of re-entry into the atmosphere.
We have cleared Discovery to re-enter," said Wayne Hale, chairman of the Mission Management Team (MMT), during a news conference at NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston.

The MMT determined the Orbiter's heat shield and other systems are in good shape. They also decided a spacewalk is unnecessary to repair damage to a thermal blanket on Discovery's outer skin.
